If you are travelling to a country that does not recognise your driving licence (European model), you will need an international driving licence. The international driving licence is issued by the local council of your place of residence.
Conditions
You may only drive on an international driving licence in Belgium if you are not registered in Belgium. As a Belgian, you must always show your Belgian driving licence (or your European model if you have already exchanged it) when requested to do so.
Procedure
- You can apply for the international driving licence at the civil affairs department at the town hall.
- The international driving licence is valid for a period of three years from the date of issue. If the national driving licence has a shorter validity period, the international driving licence takes over that validity date.
- If your international driving licence expires, if you lose it, or if it is damaged or stolen, you must apply for a new one in your municipality. To do so, you hand over
- your expired international driving licence
- or, in the case of theft, a declaration of theft by the Belgian police.
